Yes Bally’s was blah and unforgettable but the history of the property can’t be overlooked. This was THE hotel that had all the Dean Martin roasts, the beginning of the MGM brand and subsequent properties, the massive fire and how it caused everyone to do a double-take that better fire supressions systems weren’t in place and subsequently became the standard, or the flying Elvises of Honeymoon in Vegas. I stayed there in 1993 and was amazed that the tower we were in was in a time warp and hadn’t been redecorated since probably when they renovated after the fire….blue shag carpeting, and stars on the doors, with the MGM lion still visible thru the sticker of Bally’s leaf logo they had at the time. This place may be a distant memory and they are just slapping a name on the side, painting it some bland earth tones, but it will live on….everytime I glance at it I’ll be reminded of all that came before……and the shock and surprise as an 11 year old boy when flipping the channels while watching TV in room 1014 that Bally’s had adult films playing freely on a loop.

Couldn’t agree more, Phil. I get why the marquees are all going LED – so they can advertise everything. By why not both? A spinning, well lit horseshoe at the top would be absolutely awesome! Great idea! (I am sure that will not happen)

Back in 1986 my buddy and I booked a weekend at MGM Grand, a couple of days before we arrived they announced it’s Bally’s, it was very interesting looking at the pictures on the walls of MGM film stars, obviously I should have pilfered every ashtray I could find… Oh wait, the MGM Grand reopened down the street…
